How An Eye Spa Treatment Can Help Get Rid Of Bags Under Your Eyes

How An Eye Spa Treatment Can Help Get Rid Of Bags Under Your Eyes is courtesy of Jiva - Toronto Beauty Spa

In the morning, we don’t always look our best. Flopping around all night in bed can leave you with wild hair and a smushed face.

Of course, lots of us get the dreaded bags under the eyes as well. This is one of the most common beauty-related issues many people face. But where do these dark circles come from? And what can you do about it? Read on to find out!

(Spoiler alert: an eye spa treatment can help!)

What Causes Bags Under The Eyes?

While some call them dark circles, they aren’t always dark. Sometimes, the area under the eyes is just swollen or puffy. This is a result of fluid or fat building up in that area.

Why is it accumulating there? This is a natural part of the aging process, but it can also be triggered by several environmental causes. This includes a high sodium diet, lack of sleep, and dehydration. If you’re experiencing bags under your eyes, try addressing one of these three factors in your life.

But while these can help, sometimes you need to bring out the big guns. Here are some of the most effective ways to get rid of bags under your eyes.

How An Eye Spa Treatment Can Help Get Rid Of Bags Under Your Eyes | Beautiful woman getting an eye spa treatment | Jiva Spa Toronto anti aging facials beauty spa salon skin rejuvenation medispa

Use A Cream

The benefit of under-eye cream is that it’s the least invasive and most accessible way of dealing with this issue. Most women have an evening beauty routine that involves facial cleansers, toners, and moisturizers anyway, so it’s not a big deal to add an under-eye cream to the mix.

When choosing a cream, find one that has either caffeine or hyaluronic acid – these creams tend to be more effective.

Hyaluronic acid is a substance your skin naturally manufactures anyway, and is the active ingredient in Juvederm treatments. But more on that later.

What hyaluronic acid does is to act as a cushion and lubricant between the tissues in your body, hydrating and plumping sagging skin. Meanwhile, caffeine helps to tighten skin and drain excess fluids from your body.

Use Tea Bags

You may have heard this one from your mother when you were younger, but it’s just as relevant today as it’s ever been. Placing wet tea bags on your eyes has many benefits.

First of all, they contain caffeine, which as we mentioned above helps tighten your skin and drain excess fluids from the area. But they also have tannins, an organic substance found in many different plant tissues. Tannins are what give dry wines their flavour, but they also help to decrease the swelling in the area and reduce discolouration as well.

If you’re on a tight budget, or have run out of product before you got a chance to replace it, or you got several boxes of tea for Christmas and don’t really drink that much tea, this is an ideal solution. Place the wet teabags in the fridge for about 20 minutes or so to cool them off, then lay one on each eye for about 10-15 minutes. And naturally, caffeinated tea works best here.

Juvederm

Juvederm treatments can be used to help get rid of bags under your eyes as well. While Juvederm treatment is more invasive than a cream or a teabag, it also offers a longer-lasting solution, keeping your eye area youthful looking for up to a full year.

Juvederm can help smooth the contours of the area around your eyes to give it a more youthful appearance. This also has the added benefit of smoothing out crow’s feet and fine lines.

Our Jiva Eye Treatment is like a mini facial specifically geared toward the area around your eyes. We use a treatment designed to reduce swelling, drain excess fluids from your lymph nodes, and of course cleanse and exfoliate your skin as well.

The result is fresher, more youthful looking eyes which can take years off your appearance.

How To Repair Your Thyroid Naturally Through Meditation

You can’t avoid stress in life, from the common, every day sort of stress you experience when, for example, you’re late for work, to the deeper emotional issues from which anxiety and depression can stem.
But no matter what type of stress you’re dealing with, from your cardiovascular system to your brain, you’ll notice some changes in your physiology. One of the most important parts of your body affected by stress is your thyroid.

How Stress Affects The Thyroid

I’ve written about the things that can prevent your thyroid from working at its peak before, including stress.
When you’re feeling stressed out, no matter what the reason, the reaction starts in your stomach. Because your stomach doesn’t produce acid at the rate it normally does when you’re under stress, it won’t absorb nutrients at the rate it should, like selenium and zinc.
And because both selenium and zinc are crucial for thyroid health, you can see why this is bad news.
Your digestive tract also becomes less of a hospitable place for the healthy bacteria, which can start breaking down your intestinal barrier.  This broken down barrier is a major risk for autoimmune diseases, including those that affect the thyroid, like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease.
But more than just holding back the nutrients it needs, stress also interferes with your body’s ability to create the hormones you need for your thyroid to work properly. It also depresses your HPA (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) axis, which interferes with production of TSH, the thyroid stimulating hormone.
And since around 20% of your body’s thyroid hormones come from your digestive tract, the issues there affect your thyroid as well!
In short, stress wreaks havoc on your thyroid!

Does Meditation Help The Thyroid?

Now that you know what stress can do to your thyroid, what can you do about it?
Believe it or not, studies have shown that taking time to meditate can actually help lower the effects stress can have on your body. It also has benefits for other conditions too, like:
Because both ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel syndrome are linked to the digestive system, it seems like meditating can have a positive effect on it. And because your digestive tract is so important for protecting you from autoimmune diseases, meditation may help protect you from these as well.
Stress creates cortisol, which can get in your thyroid’s way. But meditation has been shown to reduce cortisol levels, which helps you get your thyroid back to where it should be.
So… how do you do it? How do you meditate? It’s not just as simple as sitting quietly, is it?

What Is Mindfulness Meditation?

Mindfulness meditation is simply about being in the moment. If you can clear your mind of the past and future, and focus only on the present moment, you’re practicing mindfulness meditation.
Ever since I started practicing mindfulness meditation, I’ve noticed my body has increased its capacity for healing. I’ve noticed my body temperature increase, my sleep improved, and my general demeanor calmer and more relaxed, just by meditating for around 20 minutes a day.
20 minutes a day may sound like a lot of time, but you can work yourself up to that. Start with smaller meditation sessions – even if you meditate for only five minutes a day you can notice a difference!
Five minutes. That’s about the same length as one of your favourite songs, or the amount of time you spend at the coffee shop in the morning. It’s a pretty small time investment for the returns you can experience!
Can you set aside five minutes a day for the sake of your health?

Until next time, this is Dr. Pat Nardini, ND, putting “Your Wellness First!

So What Is A Medi Spa, Anyway?

Find more on: Toronto Beauty Spa - Jiva Spa

I’ve been asked several times before what the difference is between a regular spa and a medi spa. They seem similar, and often provide similar services.

It can be even more confusing because some spas, like Jiva Spa, are both toronto medi spas and regular day spas. So where does the line between medi spa and day spa fall? And what are the benefits of a medi spa over a regular day spa?

Read on to find out.

What Is A Medi Spa?

A medi spa, med spa, or medical spa, is a spa that operates under the supervision of a medical doctor or other trained healthcare practitioner.

The different services vary, but they are in general considered more in-depth than regular spa services like facials and nail treatments. This means you can get better solutions for discoloration, fine lines, wrinkles, broken capillaries, redness, and other skin conditions than you can from a regular spa.

Most medi spas have a calming, laid back feel to them much like regular day spas. At first, medi spas felt more like a doctor’s office than a spa, but this is no longer the case. At Jiva Spa Toronto, we’ve taken great care to ensure the atmosphere is as relaxing and peaceful as possible.

So What Is A Medi Spa, Anyway? | a set of nice towels and candles | Jiva Spa Toronto anti aging facials beauty spa salon skin rejuvenation medispa

Medi Spa Services

You can get a range of different services from a medi spa, each esigned to help you treat a specific condition. Here are just a few of the medi spa services we offer here at Jiva Spa Toronto.

Chemical Glycol Peel

A chemical glycol peel is a facial treatment designed to restore and rejuvenate your skin.

During the process of a chemical glycol peel, a layer of glycolic acid is applied to your skin. This helps shed away the surface layers, largely made up of dead skin cells. A chemical glycol peel can help reduce blotchiness, fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, freckles, age spots, and sun damage.

At the same time, it stimulates the creation of new skin cells, giving you healthier looking skin.

Juvederm

Juvederm facial fillers are often seen as an alternative to Botox in that it treats fine lines, deep wrinkles, crow’s feet, and acne scarring. But unlike Botox, Juvederm is made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in your skin. As a result, the odds of an adverse reaction are far lower.

Juvederm helps hydrate your skin and adds volume, while at the same time fills in the imperfections in your skin, leaving you with a more youthful appearance.

IPL Photo Facial

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, and it’s one of the most advanced pieces of beauty technology on the market today.

An IPL photo facial, like the name suggests, treats your skin using light pulses to reduce uneven pigmentation, rosacea, acne, age spots, spider veins, sun damage, birthmarks, and other skin imperfections. IPL photo facials generally work best on someone with a naturally light pigment to their skin.

This treatment also has the added bonus of boosting the amount of collagen and elastin in your skin, which gives you a healthier glow and more youthful appearance.

Microdermabrasion

A microdermabrasion treatment serves a similar function to a chemical glycol peel, but uses a different approach.

Like a chemical glycol peel, a microdermabrasion removes the layer of dead skin cells on the surface of your skin to reveal a healthier, more youthful glow underneath. But instead of applying glycolic acid to the skin, a microdermabrasion works using crystals and a vacuum.

The microdermabrasion tool is both a vacuum and a gun – it shoots tiny crystals at the skin on your face, which chip away at the layers of dead skin. From there, the vacuum removes the dead skin as well as the spent crystals, clearing things up.

Despite this, though, a microdermabrasion treatment is considered a safe, routine treatment and the side effects are generally both uncommon and mild.

Deep Cleansing Facials From Jiva Spa Toronto: Different Types

Read more on: http://jivaspa.ca

Have you taken a look at all the different deep cleansing facial treatments we have to offer here at Jiva Spa Toronto?

If so, you may be a little confused. With so many different choices, after all, where do you even start? How do you know which facial treatment is the best for your skin type?

It’s with that in mind that we’ve put together this article to help you understand the benefits of each facial treatment we have to offer. Of course, you are always welcome to join us for a skincare consultation. We’ll take some time to better understand your skincare needs and goals, and from there give you a treatment plan designed to meet them.

The Jiva Signature Facial

The Jiva Signature Facial is the most unique of all our facial treatments, and that’s because we tailor it to meet your specific skincare needs. We’ll take the time to better understand what type of skin you have, and from there build a facial which purifies, hydrates, cleanses, and exfoliates.

After all, we put our name on the line with this facial, so it had better be the best!

Sensitized Skin Treatment

Some people have more sensitive skin than others. If you experience red or itchy, dry patches, blemishes, tightness, or a tingling or stinging sensation, you may have sensitive skin. In this case, not just any facial treatment will do.

In fact, those with sensitive skin should avoid certain skin treatments. This is why we built the Sensitized Skin Treatment. It helps control the symptoms of sensitive skin mentioned above, reduces visible blood vessels on the surface, and provides a nice, soothing experience for your skin.

Deep Hydrating Treatment

While many deal with sensitive skin, dry skin is also a common problem. This is especially the case here in Canada during the winter, when the biting cold whips your skin and sucks out moisture like a vampire.

Others have naturally dry skin all year round, or due to lifestyle habits. But whatever the cause of your dry skin, Jiva Spa Toronto’s Deep Hydrating Treatment can help.

This treatment is designed to restore the moisture reserves in your face in a healthy, natural way. It minimizes cracks, flaking, and other signs of dry skin. At the end of this treatment, you’ll walk away with skin feeling fresh and healthy.

Acne Facial Treatment

We’ve written a lot about adult acne recently. It’s not an easy thing to deal with, especially if you’re a career-oriented person trying to be taken seriously in a dog-eat-dog world. Acne can sap your confidence and self esteem, bringing back negative memories of your awkward high school years.

Our Acne Facial Treatment will help soften the blow of acne. Along with a deep cleansing, your skin will be exfoliated, removing the dead skin flakes which often cause acne. From there, we’ll perform individual extractions on your most problematic areas.

Firming Facial

“Do not regret growing older. It is a privilege denied to many.”

The most fortunate of us get to deal with the problem of sagging, fading skin. But even as we should celebrate each moment we have in life, there is nothing wrong with helping your skin look its healthiest.

Our Firming Facial is an anti-aging facial treatment designed to restore the collagen in your skin. This helps to tighten and firm, reducing the signs of aging. You’ll walk away with a healthier, more youthful appearance than you’ve had in years.

Classic European Facial

When you think of a facial treatment, this is the standard one that comes to mind. It’s ideal for people who don’t have any specific concerns about their skin. They don’t have sensitive skin, dry skin, aging skin, acne, or any of the other issues mentioned above.

Even still, a facial can help anybody improve the look of their skin. So if you have otherwise healthy skin, a Classic European Facial is for you.

Come In And See

If you’re still a little confused, don’t worry! The skincare game is what we do here at Jiva Spa Toronto. We can design for you a skincare treatment plan designed to meet your skin’s unique needs.

Stop in and say hi, or give us a call, and take your first step toward the skin you want.

Adult Acne: Where Does It Come From?

See more on: Toronto's best spa - Jiva

Dealing with acne is one of the most frustrating beauty-related experiences most adults will face in their daily lives.

It’s something we all hoped we could leave behind in our teenage years along with the Molly Ringwald haircut we copied from our Breakfast Club poster we tore out of Teen Beat magazine.

Most of us hoped that by the time we became adults, we’d have moved past the acne-riddled awkwardness of adolescence and proceed fresh-faced into life in our 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, and beyond.

Sadly, for many of us, that’s not the case.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, affecting more than 50 million people. Yikes.

First, let’s find out what causes adult acne. Then we can take a look at some common mistakes which can lead to an increase in acne among adults. Here at Jiva, we offer adult acne spa treatments, but there are other things you can do as well. You’ll walk away with some genuine tips on how to enjoy clearer skin.

What Causes Acne?

One of the most frustrating things about acne is the fact that we don’t fully understand what causes it and how to properly treat it. But here’s what we DO know.

It all starts with your hair follicles. Your hair follicles are connected to an oil gland. These glands secrete oil to help moisturize your hair and, by extension, your skin. When your body produces an excess amount of this oil, it can mix with dead skin cells and create a substance called sebum. They form a plug over your pores, creating the perfect environment for bacteria. And once the bacteria set up shop, the pore becomes inflamed. That’s where your zit comes from.

But while we recognize the mechanism that creates acne, we don’t know much about how to solve the problem for good. What works for one person may not work for others. But here are some of the things people have found to work for them.

Adult Acne: Where Does It Come From? | Woman popping a zit | Jiva Spa Toronto anti aging facials beauty spa salon skin rejuvenation medispa

Stress Causes Acne

Depressing, isn’t it? You get stressed out, which creates acne. You look in the mirror and see the acne, which stresses you out even more, causing more acne. It’s a wicked cycle.

Studies have shown a link between stress and acne. If you’re one of the fortunate few who was born with flawless skin and has never had to deal with acne before, however, stress won’t cause you to suddenly break out. And while this is a simplistic answer, reducing the amount of stress you have in your life can go a long way.

Touching Your Face Causes Acne?

Are you sitting at your desk right now with your head leaning against your hand? If so, you’re creating the perfect environment for acne.

Consider this for a moment -your keyboard is one of the dirtiest things in the world. You spend all day typing on it, and I’m sure you don’t clean it too often. You use it whether your hands are clean or dirty. It’s like a doorknob – a cesspool of bacteria.

Your cell phone isn’t much better. After spending all day in your purse, your pocket, or in your dirty hands, you then hold it against your face for 20 minutes having a phone chat.

Excuse me a moment. After writing that, I think I should clean a few things.

…okay I’m back.

So the point is, don’t touch your face if you can avoid it. Your hands are an often overlooked source of new bacteria which can take a free ride onto your face.

Family History

Chances are, if your parents had acne, you’ll have it too.

There’s not much you can do about this one, unfortunately. It’s just the luck of the draw.

Adult Acne Treatments In Toronto

If you’re dealing with adult acne, there is hope. Come to Jiva Spa Toronto for a skin care consultation. We’ll help you find out what is causing your acne, and what the best plan is to treat it.

Removing Unwanted Body Hair: What Are Your Options?

The article Removing Unwanted Body Hair: What Are Your Options? is courtesy of JivaSpa.ca - Beauty Spa

Men and women young and old all have this issue to deal with in one way or another.

For women, it might be some unwanted fuzz on the upper lip or chin, hair on our legs, arms, or underarms, or eyebrows that aren’t shaped quite the way we want.

For men, it might be an excessively hairy chest, legs, arms, or underarm.

But no matter who you are, you still have unwanted body hair you’d like to take care of.

What are your options? Before you pick up that razor and shaving cream, read this article to find out!

History Of Body Hair Removal

Both men and women have been removing unwanted body hair for as long as we can remember. Before the invention of laser hair removal or safety razors, though, the process was a little different.

Great leaders throughout history maintained a clean, smooth face, including Julius Caesar, who used tweezers to pluck out his hair, and Alexander the Great, who shaved using a sharpened block of iron.

We women have been removing our body hair for even longer. Ancient Egyptian women would remove their excess body hair by tweezing with two clamshells, rubbing it away with pumice stone, or by waxing with sugar-based waxes.

The modern habit of shaving our legs and underarms began in 1915 with the introduction of the first razor designed specifically for women. And since then we haven’t looked back!

But what are your options today? Surely there’s more out there than clamshells and razors, right? Of course!

Here are some of the more popular hair removal options, and their pros and cons.

Removing Unwanted Body Hair: What Are Your Options? | woman waxing her upper lip | Jiva Spa Toronto anti aging facials beauty spa salon skin rejuvenation medispa

Shaving

The classic method for removing body hair. It’s the one we’re all most familiar with. If you’re reading this, chances are you’re already familiar with it.

On the plus side, shaving is a relatively simple process. Lather, shave, rinse. That’s it. You can do it yourself at home with less than $20 worth of product - just a razor and a can of shaving cream. It’s also fairly quick, taking only a few minutes to do.

The major drawback to shaving, of course, is how quickly your hair returns. After a day or two, you’re back at the start and have to shave again. And if you’re hoping to remove a large amount of hair from your body, this can be an incredible hassle.

If this is a concern for you, you may want to consider another option.

Waxing

If you’re fed up with shaving, waxing is another common option for removing your hair.

During the waxing process, we’ll spread hot wax across the hair you’d like to remove. Then with the wax firmly attached to a sheet on the other side, we’ll pull it off. This pulls your hair out by the roots.

If that sounds painful, well, that’s because it is. Waxing is certainly the most painful option for removing your hair. While most are able to tolerate the discomfort, it should be noted anyway.

Your hair also needs to be fairly long before you can wax – about a month’s worth of growth in most people. As a result, you may feel like you have to hide your legs, arms, chest, or wherever you want to get waxed.

Waxing does, however, last longer than shaving. Waxed skin will stay smooth for up to a month or more, so if you’re going to a place where shaving isn’t going to be convenient but you still want to enjoy smooth skin, waxing may be for you.

Threading

Threading is a form of hair removal where two threads are wrapped around an individual hair and plucked out.

Because threading is so precise, it’s not very useful for larger sections of body hair. It’s mostly used to shape eyebrows or remove small hairs in the upper lip or chin.

Proponents of threading eyebrows say it allows for more precision than waxing alone, and is less painful. It does take longer, however.

Laser Hair Removal

While each of the above solutions has been around for centuries, laser hair removal is the newest of them all.

Laser hair removal works by shining an intense light on your skin. The light is absorbed by your hair follicles, which are destroyed in the process. This stops your body from producing new hair, allowing you to retain smoother skin for longer.

Laser hair removal is by far the most effective treatment for hair removal, but it’s also the most complex. You’ll usually need several treatments before you can see lasting results. And because it’s a more invasive procedure than any others it can have side effects which, while mild, are more significant than any other option.

It’s also more expensive than any other option. Depending on the area of your body you’d like to treat, it can cost up to a few hundred dollars per treatment area.

But once you‘ve completed a laser hair treatment, you’ll be done with body hair removal for a much longer time – usually for at least six months.

For laser hair treatment in Toronto, Jiva Spa can help.

Other Options

These are just some of the more popular options for hair removal. Depilatory creams, sugaring, and electrolysis are just some of the other available options.

Which is your favourite method for body hair removal? Let us know in the comments below.

Anti-Aging Skin Care Treatments: Your Eyes

The post Anti-Aging Skin Care Treatments: Your Eyes was first published on Anti-Aging and Beauty Spa - Jiva

They’re the window to the soul. And the window to the world.

They’re the tool we use most to understand the world around us.

Your eyes are one of the most important parts of your body. Without them, your life would be very different.

And when it comes to esthetics, your eyes are one of the most telling signs of age on your face.

Keeping your eyes looking youthful is one of the most effective anti-aging tricks in the book.

Here at Jiva Spa Toronto, we have a series of treatments designed specifically for your eyes. These can help give you a more youthful appearance. And when combined with other facial treatments, you can retain a youthful appearance for years to come!

It’s these treatments that allow us to remain one of the best anti-aging skin care spas in Toronto.

Let’s talk about the different solutions for your eyes, and how they can help you meet your beauty goals.

Jiva Eye Treatment

Crow’s feet, fine lines, or laugh lines. They go by many names. Whatever you want to call them, their appearance on your face is often an early warning sign of the aging process catching up with you. And since your eyes are one of the most important features on your face, these lines can make you appear older than almost any other feature on your face.

Reducing these lines is one of the most effective anti-aging treatments available. And it’s with this in mind that we developed the Jiva Eye Treatment.

A Jiva Eye Treatment is one of the most relaxing, soothing treatments we have available. Like a mini facial for your eyes, it’s designed to cleanse and exfoliate your skin, drain your lymph nodes, and reduce dark circles and puffiness.

Walking away from a Jiva Eye Treatment, you’ll feel more relaxed and look years younger.

Eyelash Extensions

Beyond a more youthful appearance, longer eyelashes are associated with sexier, more feminine eyes and face. Jiva Spa Toronto offers two different options for eyelash extensions.

The first is our Lash In A Flash solution. If you have an upcoming event, like a wedding, vacation, or performance and want to look your best, Lash In A Flash is for you. This solution lasts for about two weeks and can give you the appearance you’re looking for.

If you’re looking for a more permanent solution, Misencil eyelash extensions is for you. Misencil has developed an eyelash extension which is realistic looking, classy, and sexy! Misencil lashes work by attaching themselves to your real eyelashes, which gives them their realistic appearance.

Misencil lashes are permanent in that they last as long as your eyelashes remain attached, which is generally about one month. You can opt for the classic look, which provides a sexy enhancement to your natural lashes, or a more dramatic, Kim Kardashian type look for the longest, sexiest lashes! Visit Jiva Spa Toronto once a month to maintain your Misencil lashes and retain a gorgeous set of lashes for years to come.

High Definition Eyebrow Treatment

Your eyebrows may seem like a minor detail, but they’re the perfect way to top off a fantastic look. When your eyebrows perfectly complement your face, they can give you a more youthful, sexier appearance.

Of course, not every eyebrow shape looks good on every face. We’ll start off by determining your face shape and what would look the best for you. From there, we’ll use a combination of different techniques, including threading, tweezing, waxing, to shape them. Finally, we’ll tint them to an ideal colour, helping them frame your face and show off your gorgeous eyes!

Facial Treatments: What Is An IPL Photofacial?

Find more on: Jiva - Toronto Beauty Spa

We all want to enjoy more beautiful, healthy looking skin. And when it comes to getting the skin we want, there are many different options.

For those who are confused by the process, it can be overwhelming to even know where to start.

After all, why would you get an IPL photofacial instead of a microdermabrasion? Or a chemical glycolic peel? Or a different treatment altogether?

If you’re confused, you’re not alone.

This is the third in a multi-part article series where we explain more about the different options you have for getting the beautiful, flawless, youthful skin you’re looking for.

So far we’ve talked about chemical glycolic peels and microdermabrasions. We’ve talked about the two treatments, what they treat, and why you would use one over another. Because the two were so similar in nature, it was easy to compare them.

But today we have a new treatment on the table – the IPL photofacial. What is an IPL photofacial? Why should you choose one over the other treatments we’ve talked about so far? And what can you expect from an IPL treatment?

Read on to find out.

What Is An IPL Photofacial?

An IPL photofacial is a medispa treatment designed to reduce the effects of sun damage, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, discoloration, broken capillaries, and uneven skin. If you suffer from one of these conditions, IPL can help you even out your skin, leaving it even and beautiful where it was once blotchy and unpleasant.

The IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) laser penetrates deep into your skin. There, it causes blood vessels and collagen to contract, which helps with all the conditions listed above. It can also help with reducing age lines.

The primary difference between IPL photofacials and microdermabrasions or chemical glycolic peels is that IPL is non-abrasive. While microdermabrasions and chemical peels work away at the top layer of your skin, IPL penetrates deep down without removing any skin in the process. This can be especially effective for those with sensitive skin.

One of the big benefits to IPL photofacials, too, is that the procedure involves zero downtime. You can get an IPL photofacial at lunch and be back at the office in the same day.

Results of an IPL photofacial | Jiva Spa Toronto

Do Photofacials Work?

In general, yes. An IPL photofacial can do wonders to help even out your skin tone and give you a more youthful appearance. But as always, it isn’t designed for everyone.

If your skin is sun-damaged but you currently aren’t tanned, you may be an ideal candidate for an IPL photofacial.

If you’re hoping to even out your skin pigmentation, reduce wrinkles and fine lines, or manage rosacea, you may also be an ideal candidate.

Photofacials work best on people with lighter skin. Those with darker skin, whether naturally or via tanning, may experience limited results.

To find out whether the treatment will work for you, contact Jiva Spa. We’re a Toronto IPL photofacial spa, and can help you better understand all your options and whether IPL is right for you.

If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, using any blood thinners or anti-coagulants, or you’re currently taking Accutane to manage your acne, you should speak with your doctor before beginning an IPL treatment.

Side Effects Of Photofacials

You may experience some pain while receiving an IPL photofacial. Most find it to be nothing more than a minor discomfort.

Similar to the other treatment methods mentioned so far, you may experience some redness, dark spots, or minor bleeding after an IPL treatment. This generally disappears very quickly, though some take up to a week to recover fully.

We also advise that you avoid the sun as much as possible for a few days after your IPL photofacial treatment.

Should I Get A Photofacial?

If you’re considering an IPL photofacial treatment, contact Jiva Spa Toronto today.

You’ll get a chance to sit down with one of our professional estheticians, who will help you better understand your options and whether a photofacial, a microdermabrasion, a chemical peel, or another option is best for you.

Skin care is a tricky game. While you may be able to do it yourself when it comes to at-home skin care techniques like an avocado mask or an oatmeal bath, that’s not always enough to deliver the results you’re looking for.

Especially when it comes to anti-aging, the process can be even trickier. The skin treatments you used at home just don’t seem to work like they used to, and you need something larger to get the skin you need.

That’s where a health and beauty spa comes in. An experienced esthetician can help you determine your skin’s unique needs, and what the best option is for giving you the results you’re looking for.

Last time we talked about chemical glycolic peels. We talked about the results you can achieve with them, the type of conditions it can treat, and what to expect throughout the process.

Today we’ll be taking a look at the microdermabrasion. Similar in purpose to a chemical glycolic peel, a microdermabrasion can help give you more beautiful looking skin and fight off the aging process.

What Is A Microdermabrasion?

When it comes to getting a facial treatment in Toronto, a microdermabrasion is one of the more popular non-surgical facial treatments. It’s a day spa treatment, so you can be in and out in a short amount of time when compared to the more invasive surgical procedures out there.

How does it work? It’s all in the name – microdermabrasion. Let’s break it down. There are three parts to the name – "micro," "derm," and "abrasion".

First, let’s start at the end – derm, and abrasion. A microdermabrasion works by abrading your skin (derm, from "dermis," or skin). It scrapes away the uppermost layer of skin on your face, your epidermis, which is made up entirely of dead skin cells.

This outer layer is where you’ll find most of your wrinkles, imperfections, and blemishes. A microdermabrasion is designed to remove this layer and exfoliate the skin underneath, leaving you with healthier, more youthful looking skin.

The microdermabrasion tool is both a gun and a vacuum. The gun shoots tiny (micro) crystals at your face, which chips away at the layer of dead skin cells on your face. At the same time, the vacuum will raise a small section of your face at a time, which makes it easier to remove the dead skin cells.

As the dead skin cells are flaked off, the vacuum will remove them as well as the used crystals, leaving behind a cleaner, clearer face.

Should I Have A Microdermabrasion Done?

As with most cosmetic treatments, a microdermabrasion is not for everyone. For certain people, a microdermabrasion can actually aggravate an already existing condition. No matter what though, you should consult an esthetician before having a microdermabrasion or any other facial treatment done.

If you suffer from rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, lupus, diabetes dermatitis, warts, open sores or lesions, widespread or severe acne, fragile capillaries, or herpetic lesions, a microdermabrasion may not be the best option for you. In certain of these situations a chemical glycolic peel or IPL photo facial may be a better treatment plan.
At Jiva Spa Toronto, our qualified estheticians will help you make the best decision to help you reach your goals based on your skin’s unique needs.

Microdermabrasion Side Effects

A microdermabrasion is considered a safe, routine treatment, and there are few risks or concerns related to it. However, minor complications can sometimes arise.

In particular, you may experience some minor bruising, redness, or changes in skin pigmentation, minor bleeding, fine broken blood vessels, and flare-ups in cold sores if you were already prone to them. These issues nearly always disappear on their own within a few days of treatment. If they last longer, consult your doctor.

And if you’re trying to discover the best treatment option for you, it can sometimes be overwhelming.

With so many different options, where do you even start?

In this first of a multi-part series, you’ll get a chance to better understand the benefits of the different options for skin treatment. That way, when it comes to making a decision about what to do, you’ll have the knowledge you need.

Of course, no blog article is a substitute for speaking with an experienced professional. Here at Jiva Spa Toronto, we provide these articles for educational purposes only. We have professionals on staff which can help you make the right decision for your skincare needs.

With that out of the way, today we’ll be talking about chemical glycolic peels. What is a chemical glycolic peel? What are the effects of a chemical glycolic peel? And will it give you the results you’re looking for? Read on to find out.

What Is A Chemical Glycolic Peel?

A chemical glycolic peel is a facial treatment which helps rejuvenate the skin on your face, giving you a fresher more youthful glow.

When it comes to skin face treatments in Toronto, a chemical glycolic peel is one of the many options.

Using glycolic acid, a natural alpha hydroxy acid found in sugarcane, which is one of the most efficient ways to penetrate deep into your skin’s pores and clean out any unwanted elements. It’s designed to damage your skin in a controlled manner, eating away at your outermost layer.

Since this layer of skin is made up entirely of dead skin cells, the process will clear this away, leaving you with healthier, more youthful looking skin.

Should You Get A Chemical Glycolic Peel?

Chemical glycolic peels can deliver great results, but they aren’t for everyone.

Chemical glycolic peels work best on people with fairly mild skin imperfections. Because the treatment is one of the harsher ones when it comes to non-surgical facial treatments, those with more severe skin conditions can sometimes have adverse reactions.

If you have acne scarring, or are experiencing fine lines, a chemical peel can help reduce those.

Chemical peels are also considered effective for acne treatment, since they exfoliate your skin and unclog pores.

Chemical Peel Vs. Microdermabrasion

When looking at the benefits of a chemical peel and comparing it with that of a microdermabrasion, you might find them to be very similar.

And in fact they are. Both treatments are effective for similar skin conditions. Both treatments work by removing the outer layer of dead skin cells. The primary difference is in the methodology.

Where a chemical glycolic peel works using glycolic acid, a microdermabrasion uses tiny crystals. We’ll talk more about how exactly that works in the next article.

Which option is best for you depends on your skin type, conditions you hope to treat, and the results you’d like to achieve. Speaking with an esthetician will help you understand the differences, and which option is best for your needs.
